Congratulations, you landed the interview! Now it’s time to think about one of the most important steps in creating a lasting first impression: Dressing for success. After all, 71% of employers wouldn’t hire someone who doesn’t follow the appropriate dress code. This statistic may seem frightening but choosing your interview outfit doesn’t have to be. Keep these 5 tips in mind when choosing what to wear at your next interview.
1. Do Your Research
If you’re unsure about what to wear, scope out the company website. In other words, Google is your best friend! Doing some research on the company can give you an idea of its formality level, giving you hints on how to dress. Oftentimes you can get a sense of the company dress code through its social media. Take a look at the Employment Enterprises Instagram page. Can you find any hints on how employees dress at the office?
2. Consider The Industry
If you’re still unsure of what to wear after researching the company, consider the industry or department you are interviewing in. Most professional industries such as business, finance, and law lean towards a business professional dress code. When in doubt, there are no drawbacks to dressing up a little. And if you still have doubt, send an email to your recruiter to ask about the appropriate dress code!
3. Choose Something That’s Comfortable and Confident
Feeling good in your interview outfit is just as important as looking good in your interview outfit. Choose clothing that fits you well and that you feel confident in. Avoid restrictive or itchy clothing that could be uncomfortable. While self-expression is an important part of confidence, keep in mind that you are still interviewing for a job; keep it authentic, simple, and of course, professional.
4. Avoid The “Don’ts”
While company dress codes vary, avoid these interview attire “don’ts” when choosing your outfit.
- Distracting Piercings: While companies are becoming more accepting, consider removing any facial piercings for your interview. Once you get the job, ask your manager if the company dress code allows facial piercings.
- Athletic wear: Athletic wear such as sweatpants, gym shorts, or sneakers are not appropriate and may give the impression that you don’t care about the interview.
- Jeans and T-shirts: Because of their casual nature, it’s best to steer clear of t-shirts and jeans for an interview. Dress it up by choosing dress pants and a button-up or blouse.
- Visible undergarments: Be sure to completely cover undergarments during an interview. Avoid sheer blouses and garments that expose your midriff.
5. Prepare Your Outfit Well Before the Interview
I almost forgot the most important “Don’t” of all: Don’t wait until the last minute! Prepare your outfit at least a day in advance to reduce your interview stress. Make sure your clothes are clean and free of wrinkles. Check for any stains, holes, or other imperfections on your garments. If your outfit passes these checks, then you’re good to go! Now you’re ready to make a great first impression at your next interview.
