Should I Still Be Applying For Jobs During the Holidays?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to find new opportunities! You should absolutely continue to apply for jobs during the holidays. There are lots of new job openings that are available, even when people are typically focused outside of work. Here are some tips to remember while you keep those applications rolling.

Not Everyone Celebrates

While many people celebrate holidays in December, not everyone does. And even those who do are not always taking vacation time. You will still reach hiring managers during this time, so it’s best not to take too much time off from your job search. It might even be a great time to reach out to contacts to set up a virtual coffee chat to learn more about the companies that interest you.

Companies Need You

Companies are always looking for new candidates, and many positions become available at the end of the year. Keep looking on job boards (like the Employment Enterprises Job Portal) for new opportunities. Sending applications at the end of the year might result in a longer than usual response time if people are out of the office, so continue to be patient!

Get Ahead of Competition

Because there is a misconception that hiring slows down at the holiday season, other job seekers might be taking a break. This is a great advantage to you, since you know to keep applying! Some candidates may also be unavailable for phone calls or interviews due to vacations. If possible, clear your calendar except for the absolute must-take vacation days you need.

Rekindle Old Connections

Holidays are a great time to rekindle old connections! Send a note to your former boss or colleagues and set up a chat. Bonus points if you can meet in person! Make sure you show interest in their lives but avoid asking for favors. This is especially important if you’ve been out of touch for years. Keep the focus on building the relationship, not what they can do for you.

Solidify Your Resume

You might find that things are very quiet, after all. Use this time to take a strategic look at your portfolio and/or resume. Ask trusted connections for their honest feedback to get an outside opinion. Sometimes a second set of eyes can spot typos or omissions that you didn’t realize.

Prioritize Self-Care

The holiday season is typically a busy time whether you celebrate or not. Make sure you’re taking good care of yourself while you search for jobs, and keep a positive outlook. Eat healthy foods, exercise, take a break from electronics, and enjoy time with family and friends. Your perfect opportunity is out there – take care of yourself so that you’re ready when it comes!
