Expert Advice for Job Seekers Straight From the “Shark Tank”

On ABC’s show “Shark Tank,” entrepreneurs showcase their ideas to the business experts (called “sharks”) who give them honest feedback and, if they are lucky, back their ideas with cash. Who better than these experts to give advice to job seekers?

One shark, Barbara Corcoran, recently shared two characteristics that define every job candidate she interviews. You might think she would value a degree from a top school or a track record of excellence. These are, of course, valuable traits. However, the things she looks for anyone can have, no matter what position they are applying for. She wants to see a winning attitude and the ability to communicate well.

A winning attitude is a must for Corcoran because she only wants to hire people who want to do well. Positivity will take you far, she says, and no one has the time or energy for a negative coworker. She also emphasizes a lack of complaining as part of the winning attitude.

As for wanting a good communicator, Corcoran is not alone. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 73% of employers want a candidate with strong written communication skills. Corcoran suggests taking as many English classes as possible while in school. Her advice goes beyond just education, however. Focus on improving your communication and other soft skills in every role to grow your career.

Another shark, Mark Cuban, advises those who are job hunting to be prepared for a new interview question. “The first question every interviewer is going to ask you is: ‘What did you learn during the pandemic of 2020? What skills did you add during the pandemic of 2020?’”

Cuban suggests that job seekers continue to add to their skill-set, “no matter what it is.” He says to use this time to become great at whatever it is you want to do, and don’t stop applying to jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is projected to grow by 6 million jobs from 2019 to 2029. Cuban may be on to something, as employers begin rehiring after the COVID crisis eases and jobs open up.
